Nicola looked at the two of them with the hope that they would get more work from them to earn more money.

Ans. Luigi was the driver who did not approve of the two boys. He thought they were untidy and poorly
dressed. Nicola and Jacopo, were shabbily dressed in worn-out clothes. Their hair was tangled. Jacopo wore a shortened army tunic while Nicola wore an old jersey and cut off khaki pants.
(b) Why were the narrator and his companion impressed by the two boys?
Answer- The narrator and his companion were impressed by the two boys by their hard work, determination, and selfless nature. The boys were ready to do any odd job like selling fruit, running errands and working as tourist guides, even in the hot Sun. They were resourceful and deternmined to do useful work. The boys were also helpful to the narrator in many ways. They arrange seats for the
opera, take him around Juliet’s Tomb, and provide him with the name of a good restaurant.

Ans- The narrator was surprised to see the two boys shining people’s shoes. The narrator thought that the boys only sold fruit to earn their livelihood because he had earlier seen them selling strawberries. The narrator was much curious to understand why they were engaged in so many professions.
d) How were boys useful to the author?
Ans- The boys were useful to the narrator because he was new to the place and the boys provided him
information about good restaurants, got him seats for the opera and found packs of American
cigarettes for him. They also showed him places like Juliet’s tomb.

Ans. The boys were in the deserted square at night as they were waiting for the last bus from Padua. They
wanted to sell newspapers to the passengers of that bus and earn some more money. The character
traits exhibited by the boys here are dedication and perseverance.
f) The narrator asks the boys, “Must you work so hard? You both look rather tired.” The boys reply, “We are not complaining, sir.” What do you learn about the boys from their reply?
Ans. The given lines tell us that the boys were mature. They understood that ups and downs are a part and parcel of every human life. Complains and hatred serve no purpose. Only dedication, hard work and constant pursuit of one’s goal can bring about desired changes in one’s life.

They symbolized the hope for humanity.
(b) Do you think the boys looked after Lucia willingly? Give reasons for your answer.
Ans- Yes, I think the boys looked after Lucia willingly because they sacrificed their own needs to save
the money for the treatment of their sister. They didn’t have any force from anyone.

Ans. In our society, people work only for their own interests. Nobody cares about others. Each one only cares own selfish needs. This tendency kills the hope for humanity. In this context, Two Gentlemen of Verona’ is a story of hope for society.
The two boys, Nicola and Jacopo work for the well-being of their sister Lucia. She is suffering from tuberculosis of the spine. They do many odd jobs to earn money for her treatment and don’t fear the difficulties. Bearing their hardships themselves they don’t seek help from others. To achieve their goal, they never adopt any wrong way. They are honest, loving, brave and sincere. They believe in sacrifice, sincerity and devotion. In this way the story, conveys the message of sacrifice, sincerity and devotion.

Ans. We are told in the end of the lesson that both the boys belong to a cultured family who were ruined by the Germans and the War. The boys, thus, did not forget the background of their family and take pride in it. Hence, it could be one of the reasons why they did not like to share their problems or ask for help.
